Hello Raskals!
I’m Chamil, and as the newest financial adviser here at Rask, I’m proud to be part of a team that’s reshaping how Australians engage with their finances.
I first stumbled across Rask when one of my former colleagues appeared as a guest on the Australian Finance Podcast, way back in 2022. Since then, I have been a sporadic listener, until late last year, when I started binging on them. My favourite is the Australian Retirement Podcast with James and Drew (shhhh don’t tell Owen).
My journey into financial advice
For me, becoming a financial adviser wasn’t a single lightbulb moment. It was a steady evolution, shaped by curiosity, and a desire to make advice more personal, and just, better.
My time in the industry started just over 12 years ago, at State Trustees. Here I progressed from planning assistant to paraplanner, then adviser, and eventually into senior leadership. Along the way, I’ve worked across superannuation, social security, trusts, tax planning, investments, insurance and even aged care, yes, the full alphabet soup of financial complexity! Whilst I love digging into the technical side of advice, what drives me is delivering advice that resonates, and truly makes a difference in people’s lives.
I grew up in Sri Lanka, attending private school and surrounded by opportunity. In a country where 90% of people didn’t have access to the same education or resources, I was more fortunate than most.. Gratitude was ingrained early, but it wasn’t until I moved to Australia, nearly 20 years ago, that I truly understood what opportunity could mean.
Living in Australia opened my eyes. Here, I saw how hard work could genuinely shift the trajectory of someone’s life. There was more equality, more access, and more support, especially for those who needed it most. That realisation shaped the way I approached my career.
Working at the Public Trustee was a turning point. My clients ranged from individuals with severe disabilities, to those experiencing elder abuse or simply lacking a support system. Some had less than $50,000 to invest. Others had millions. But what united them was vulnerability. And what they needed wasn’t just financial advice, it was structure, clarity, and someone who could help them cut through the noise and focus on the long term.
That experience taught me that good financial planning isn’t about chasing returns. It’s about building good habits, simplifying complex information, and empowering people to make decisions with confidence. I worked closely with lawyers, accountants, and trust specialists, navigating sensitive family dynamics and complex legal frameworks.
It gave me a deep respect for the emotional side of money, and the importance of advice that’s both technically sound and deeply personal.
My role at Rask
At Rask, I will work predominantly with clients who have complex circumstances or are simply time-poor and need ongoing project management to sort out their finances. Whether it’s a business owner juggling multiple entities or a family navigating intergenerational wealth, I bring a strategic lens and a steady hand.
I believe financial advice should feel like a partnership. It should simplify, not overwhelm. It should empower, not judge. And above all, it should reflect the values and goals of the person sitting across from you.
That’s why I do what I do. Because when advice is done right, it doesn’t just change portfolios, it changes lives.
