Each day, I ‘pay myself’ a minimum of one hour but ideally two. It’s my time to learn, be entertained, lower stress and improve myself. The best investment you’ll make is yourself.
In 2018, one of my three goals is to spend two hours each working day on learning a computer language and reading. Click here for last week’s reading list.
Here’s a collection of some great psychology, finance and investing podcasts, books and blogs, I consumed this week. Reading for knowledge — rather than entertainment — is really important to me.
Collaborative Fund
Collaborative Fund is one of my must-read blogs. It focuses on venture capital, risk, behaviour, investing strategy and more.
Why I’m Bullish on Gen Z – a technologically connected world, according to Morgan Housel, is helping more people accept, critique and embrace others’ views — and that’s a good thing.
Farnam Street
Written by Shane Parrish, you won’t find a better blog and community of people who want to think better. I’m working my way through Farnam’s 113 mental models.
Farnam Street’s learnings apply as much to investing as they do business and everyday life.
The Top 3 Most Effective Ways to Take Notes While Reading
The Necessity of Marginalia in the Age of the Ebook
These two articles reminded me of some of the important techniques to remember what you read: abuse the margins of a book; at the end of the chapter, put some of the ideas in your own words; and re-read your notes regularly.
Australian Financial Review
Johnathon Shapiro’s Inside the boiler room that is Big Un Limited
This article focuses on the Australian video company, Big Un Ltd (ASX: BIG), which was recently suspended by the ASX and ASIC pending an investigation into its corporate practices. While I did not find the shenanigans surprising (it happens more often than many investors realise), Shapiro’s great write-up offers an insight for beginners who are reminded to question everything.
Books
One Up On Wall St – Peter Lynch
A classic book to introduce sharemarket investing. I read the book years ago but it has some great lessons, so I wanted to revisit it.
Podcasts
Invest Like The Best
One of the best podcasts I know. This week, I listened to Pat Dorsey’s second chat with Patrick. Patrick quizzes him on the intricate details of his investment strategy, valuation and process.
Pat Dorsey Returns – The Moat Portfolio
Animal Spirits Podcast
This is a new podcast by Mike Batnick and Ben Carlson of Ritholtz Wealth Management. It is shorter episodes, which makes them easy listening when you’re in the car or train for 20 minutes. The podcasts are a funny and insightful take on financial markets and investing. They also share some of their best books and articles from the week.
How I Built This
A fantastic podcast for anyone, not only investors. It details the stories of how great companies were built and the struggles of the founders.
Dyson: James Dyson – this episode documents the journey of the vacuum cleaner empire’s founder, James Dyson. A wonderful insight into learning from mistakes and by trial and error.
